Here are some of our most frequently asked questions about the Motability Scheme: 

How does the Motability Scheme work? 

The Motability Scheme makes it simple and affordable for people receiving disability allowances to drive a car, giving them greater independence and mobility. Eligible individuals can exchange part or all of their allowance for a lease on a brand new car. When using the Motability Scheme, you can enjoy a generous mileage allowance of up to 60,000 miles throughout the duration of your lease. 

What is included on the Motability Scheme?

The Motability Scheme can help you cover practically all the costs associated with owning and running a car, with the exception of fuel. You can use your disability allowance to cover the cost of leasing a vehicle and also benefit from the additional savings on other things covered by the scheme. These include insurance, servicing, maintenance, tax, breakdown assistance and windscreen and tyre repairs.            

Am I eligible for the Motability Scheme?

I don’t drive - can I still use the Motability Scheme?

You don’t need to drive to use the Motability Scheme. You can also use your allowance to lease a car for a family member, friend or carer to drive on your behalf.

What cars are available on the Motability Scheme?

Can I get adaptations on a Motability car?

Yes. If you need adaptations to your Motability car, one of our Motability specialists will be able to help you choose a car that can be adapted to suit your needs.

How much do adaptations cost?

For the most part, adaptations can be fitted without any additional cost. 

How much will a Motability car cost?

You have three options when it comes to choosing a Motability car, so you can choose the one that best fits your budget. You can choose a lease that costs exactly the same as your allowance and redeem the full amount or keep the difference if you choose a car that is less than your weekly allowance. We also have cars available that cost the same as the weekly allowance plus a one-off Advance Payment. 

What options do I have at the end of my car lease agreement?

The options available at the end of your lease agreement are:

  • Lease another car through Motability for the next three years
  • See if you can keep your current car longer
  • Return your car and have your Motability allowance reinstated
