Aylesbury Motor Group employee Adrian Stevens will be taking on a challenge this October when he runs five marathons in five days. The Sales Manager will be taking a week away from the wheels, using his own legs to take him a total of 131 miles.
The event is in aid of the Florence Nightingale Hospice Charity, a local hospice based here in the heart of Aylesbury. The Florence Nightingale Hospice is a charity close to Adrian’s heart because they looked after his mum at the end of her battle with cancer. In Adrian’s words, the hospice helped to “take away the pain, take away the worry… and bring some reassurance that we as a family were in the best possible place”.
Sadly, Adrian’s mum passed away at the hospice on the 5th October 2016, but the family is incredibly grateful for the palliative care, calm approach and caring support they provided for everybody. This challenge is Adrian’s way of saying thank you to the hospice and providing support so that they can continue to offer the same care to others in need. He will complete his final marathon exactly 3 years after his mum passed away.
Adrian is no stranger to marathons; he once set himself the challenge of running the London marathon. That marathon took place in April 2016, and his mum and dad both went along to support him on the day. It was an incredibly proud moment for his mum but, shortly after, she was first diagnosed with stage 4 ovarian cancer. The diagnosis came as a shock to the entire family and the following two months were the hardest thing the family had ever been through.
It’s been 3 years since Adrian ran the London Marathon and, this time, the marathons will be taking place much closer to home. Over the five days, Adrian will be setting up five different loops around different streets in Aylesbury. Each course will be 1-2 miles long, and he will run each one enough times to complete an entire marathon.
Although Adrian has set himself this challenge, he would love for anybody who wants to get involved to do so. He’ll be running for at least a few hours every day and invites everybody in Aylesbury to come and join him throughout the day.
